Description
Take Trails End Road 1.75 miles west out of Mackinaw City. Turn left on an unnamed dirt/gravel road 50 feet before the stop sign at Wilderness Park Drive. Follow the road to six numbered sites. The shoulders of the road are sandy and the turnaround at the end is tight, but I had no trouble with my 24' travel trailer. The sites are mostly out of site of each other, are right next to beautiful French Farm Lake and are free.

I used to deer hunt up there, I was shocked to see anyone knew of the place besides me, in 5 years of hunting there, I have never seen another person. There are no big bucks so dont bother hunting here. and no fish in the lake either

I Have stayed there with Tents, slept in car and once with a 36 foot Class A. If your in a Class A don't go all the way to the end. If you do you will have to back out. There are places that you can turn around by backing in and out. I have camped there since 1971. I have only had one bad experience when there was some young drunk rowdy's partying. Yet, I've run into that in high end parks. It is rustic, no lights, sand road and very secluded most of the times. Most people staying there are very nice. There is a time of the year when there is a large motorcycle rally that comes for a week. I use to live up there but don't consider myself a local.

There isn't one campsite out of the six that you can view the lake. Weeds overtaking the lake.

Camping permits are required, but can't be used because locals occupy the campsites continuously. Limited camping is 14 days. DNR does come through at times. Evidently they aren't as strict as they should be.

Very rustic. Can't count on a site. Locals keep them occupied all summer. They park and then commute to Mackinaw all summer. DNR very scarce. Very out of the way; camp at your own risk.

Just got back from here. This is primitive camping at its best. Not for DPs or Class A rigs. No problem with my 23-foot Class C.

GREAT directions, easy to find. Precisely, get off northbound I-75 at first Mackinaw City exit; turn left (south) for 500 feet; follow sign to Wilderness State Park, then detailed instructions from Bill Norman. Found the campground to be a DNR free site with only 5 marked spots we could find, but easy to get into and navigate around. We stayed on site #2 and found it a good fit with our small motorhome. No streetlights here, so be prepared to be dark, quiet, and alone. It fit the bill of free camping for us though.
