Description
From Highway 44, take the gravel road to Butte Lake, Lassen Volcanic NP. Immediately before you enter the National Park, there is a gravel road on the left. Follow that gravel road less than 1/4 mile to where a small creek crosses the road. A creekside spot to boondock in absolute quiet. It's free, none of the rules and regulations of the regular NP campground, and is only a few minutes drive from the Park and Lake. Room for several RVs. The area is black sand, so get out and walk through the site a bit to test the soil.

This camp area isn't so secret. I found it 17 years ago and it still sounds the same!

The gravel road referred to is called Butte Lake Road. Take a right onto Butte Lake Road approximately 11.2 miles after going East on HW44 from where HW44 intersects with HW89 at Old Station, CA.

If you keep going on the gravel road you arrive at Butte Lake Campground (within the Nat'l Park). Started tent camping there with kids 35+ years ago, now in comfort of motorhome. Slow fairly short drive on graded road, but nice sites on arrival, with Butte Lake for fishing, kayaking, and Cinder Cone close by for climbing; nice trails; Bath Tub Lake for swimming. Gorgeous spot, still pristine w/beautiful scenery. Daily fee to camp; camp host on site. It's worth the short drive in from Butte Creek campground. We love it!

There's going to be some people mad at me for posting this 'secret' spot.
