We attended a sales meeting after being called w/ a "you won" free camping at the RV show. The campground in Gettysburg is the sister site to thier Sycamore Lodge site in Jackson Springs NC. I asked many questions they couldn't answer, such as "who is your parent company?" and "what % of your campers are members?" along with many, many other probing questions. Whenever someone tells you they're expecting you to spend 5 to 10 thousand dollars (for ANYthing)...but you must DECIDE NOW; red flag. Any good deal available today is usually available tommorrow. Didn't this mirror the same pitch the current members got? If so - why did you not say no? Why did common sense not prevail? We're dedicated RVers who love travel, as well as nice places to stay. Value is all about running the numbers ($$) against the benefits. I'm betting the "members" let the salesperson run the numbers FOR them, and then just couldn't find a way to say no, even when thier gut told them to. When that much investment is made in a prospective buyer, it tends to make them feel a "no" is unacceptable. That's the definition of high-pressure sales. If you attend one of these meetings as a result of 'free camping', beware that you are about to be asked to make a significant investment of debt ($$) that you can't easily get out of, and will surely regret. Ask for a copy of the contract, the FULL contract, not the paper you sign detailing YOUR obligations, but the one they supposedly give you after you sign, stating exactly what you recieve for that money. You will not get it.

[So those complaining about our wanting free camping.....didn't you visit the campground before purchasing your site???] Yes, we visited and we got a free meal at Pickett's Buffet. No free camping!

Good, now you can experience the same frustration all the other paying members experience. Your ass was kissed 'cause you were a 'potential' member, now that you're a member like all of us you can have fun trying to get a site in YOUR campground. TRA is only interested in selling memberships they're not interested in the members having a camp site.

They don't sell sites, silly, it a private campground for members. The "free" sites for first time visitors are not member sites. We were out there this summer and had such a wonderful time. We were very excited to see the additonal brand new sites for members and a bunch more being developed. We were very pleased with the people, location and all of the extras. So much so, we became members. Dream. Plan. Go.

They shouldn't be selling anymore sites. When a member can't get a site in their members only campground because there's no site availability then it's time to stop selling memberships and close the gates. The Browning's below certainly didn't need a free campsite for 4 nights by the looks of what they were driving, and they had no intension of purchasing a membership. They just used us for a free ride at our expense. That's what makes our members angry.

We found GBR right here on Free Campgrounds the day before the day that we were in search of a place. Linked to their web site and called. They invited us for 4 days and we stayed and enjoyed ourselves for all 4. Yes there was a sales pitch but we declined and every one was gracious and cordial. its large and has more than anyone could ask for,,,for free. If its a part of the country that you frequent it could be more interest than a few free nights.

We are...and whatever we have to do to keep arrogant people like you looking for a freebee OUT of our private facility we're going to do it.

Come on people, private campgrounds are just that...private, meaning, not open to the general public and only available upon invitation, not meant for anyone to simply pull off the road and set up camp. Private campgrounds are not meant for the average person or every type of camper, which is just one of the appealing amenities. Those invited for free camping upon their first visit are camping in a limited number of sites designated for potential new members. Obviously, the internet and these type of blogging sites are open to all, even those who are completely clueless, ignorant and misinformed. If you have true issues and want real answers and solutions, why waste your time complaining to a faceless screen? As with any situation, fight your fear and obstacles by communicating directly with those who can make a difference.
