Description
Not exactly a "campground." Wilderness camping in Alexander Wilderness. Not for the large RV. Smaller RVs with folks accustomed to driving longer distances on narrow, bumpy dirt/sand roads, but WONDERFUL once you get there. Look for Alexander Springs National Park (fee area) within the Ocala National Forest (about 40 miles inland of New Smynra Beach and about 40 miles away from Orlando). Then on County Road 40, drive till you see National State Park Road sign for 552/18. Follow that bearing to the right at the curve in the road with the sign that says Alexander Wilderness. Total from turnoff 40 to the "parking lot" is 5 miles one way. Lovely stream and if you walk the paths, you will see Florida--true Florida much in the way the early Spanish explorers saw this. Note: November- January is "gun season" for deer hunters. Wear BLAZE ORANGE and stay VERY CLOSE to the road and/or the spring if you go during gun season. We were there during gun season.... Today is 1/1/09.... we just got back to civilitation after 5 days BoonDocking there. Otherwise, this is considered Primitive NO FEE camping by the National Forest Folks (per a guy who volunteers at the info center)

A small RV could be used such as a Toyota RV. and yes there are three sites. I have seen a Toyota camper camp in the camp sites. It is pack in pack out for trash and anything else. The stream that runs thru there is from Alexander spring.

thank fully the spanish didnt follow those directions, from astor take STATERT 40 WEST .7 MILES TO cr 445a left go .7 miles to cr 445 left follow 5 miles and the rest is correct except this parking lot is not legal to camp in, there are 3 tent sites in the woods adjoining this lot, 4 day limit, your allowed to tent camp off any national forest dirt rd. call any ranger station for details. a good 4x4 will take you to hundreds of free camping spots.
