Description
The cost of the camping is $6 a YEAR, obtainable at the city hall or local convenience stores. You can camp on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico. Because homesteaders are not wanted, you must move every three days, at least 500 yards or so. The reason is so people won't put a lot of stuff outside their campers. We use it every year we go to Texas. There are no hook-ups, but there's water. Trash cans are every hundred yards or so. Police patrol the area. A fee dump station is at the county park at the north end of the island. Dump fee and water $2.

Theft is a problem both on the beach and around town. Local law enforcement blames this on visitors and it may be true. Don't leave small items, bikes included, unsecured.

We spent a wonderful couple days on the beach in September 2006. Couldn't wait to get back. We went again in June 2007 and the beach was covered in seaweed that was full of dead catfish. The smell was awful. We were told this is a problem every year at that time.

According to the Port Aransas website, the camping sticker fee is now $12. Page doesn't say how long it lasts. http://www.cityofportaransas.org/beach_permits.cfm

RVs are now restricted to 3 days; must be gone 2 weeks unless you pay the $10 a day fee. Free camping is also restricted to area between marker 27 and 34 allegedly due to loud generators. Major construction in progress all along the beach area. No longer an RV friendly area in my opinion. I will bypass this area in the future. Padre Island National Seashore 20 miles south is $10 for 7 days or $20 a year. Just my humble opinion.

Yes, it is low cost camping, and if you don't like the ferry, you can go around the other way. Just drive thru Corpus Christi, go south on the SPID road, then turn left on 361 to Pt. Aransas.

Overnight camping to be eliminated soon. Day time camping only.

The ferry is FREE! I spent several weeks there a year and a half ago and got so much salt mist on my tow dolly that it required sandblasting and repainting. Really enjoyed it though.
