Description
This is a USFS campground at the top of the mountain situated on the Virginia/West Virginia border. There are about 10 sites in one loop. There are some great hiking trails that start at the campground. There is a water pump and pit toilets are available. Note: Small RVs only (I have a 27' class C that fits snugly on the parking pad).

I camped here in a 24' Class C motorhome, which easily fit on the parking pad, but I don't think anything march larger 28-30' RV would fit in these sites. There is a separate parking area where you could park towing vehicles or toads, if needed. The campground is very clean, wooded, with nice fire rings at each site. We were able to find enough dead wood for a campfire each day. For anyone trying to find this campground, take Rt. 42 west from Woodstock and at Columbia Furnace turn right onto Wolf Gap Rd. Watch your signs carefully, as there are several places where other roads fork off. Take Wolf Gap Rd all the way to the campground at the top of the mountain, which is right on the Virginia/West Virginia border. At the campground the road becomes Trout Run Rd and starts descending just past the campground. The coordinates for the entrance of the campground are 38.923677, -78.689564. The roads are rather windy, but I could easily pass other vehicles. I had no problem getting to the website in my RV.

Update from last post about bridge out: Short well marked detour in place. Newly paved (1 1/2 lane) road coming from VA was a pleasure to drive. Be aware of lots of traffic during peak times of year. The campsite was as expected with tent pad and fire ring. Large tables as each site. Not much privicy as sites are close to each other and ther is lots of foot traffic. Campsite 8 was the biggest but 3 or 4 are good also. Water pump does not work and has not for a while. Bring water. Woods are picked clean for wood but lots of roads close to explore and find good wood. Good campsite overall. Great hikes all directions.

As of fall 2007, the bridge was washed out! Don't go there especially if you're in an RV. There are two roads that lead to the campground; both converge at the point where the bridge has fallen. We got into a very tight spot trying to get there, even with our 24' 5th wheel. Ended up staying at the state park outside of Blacksburg because the local Wally World bans overnighting. It was a LONG day of driving. Avoid this place at all costs.

Yes, you can get to it by motorcycle easily. I stayed during this past winter and it was great!

Is this campground accessible by street motorcycle? Sounds like a great place to camp!

You can pitch a tent. I haven't been there in over a decade but it used to be my overnight spot when driving from upstate NY to the southeast. With a tent and sleeping bag, it's a fantastic way to spend a night during a road trip.

Hi. I am also wondering if you can pitch a tent at this location?

If you are coming from the north on I-81, take Exit 283 (that is Woodstock). You will be on Route 42 when you leave the exit ramp. Turn right toward Wal-Mart but pass it and stay on Route 42. Columbia Furnace is about 6 miles. You will recognize it by an old schoolhouse (converted to apartments but still looks like a schoolhouse), a used car lot, and a combination service station and convenience store. There are also 3 houses. As you cross the bridge, turn hard right and head for the old schoolhouse. Wolf Creek Road runs in front of the old schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is below the bridge. If you get to the service station and car lot, turn around and go back.
