A reader named Anna tells of boondocking in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Utah
(Sept., 2000)
In August, I took a 14 day trip and stayed in only five campgrounds, average $10 a night. Here's where I stayed:
Boulder Creek, Calif.: Turn right at Rainbow cafe go towards the river. There is a parking spot at a small park and a parking spot by the bridge overlooking the river. Trash cans. Stayed by the bridge no problem.
Stinson Beach, Calif: Go past Stinson on Highway 1 until you come to Olima/Balinas Rd., turn left. Along this road there are a number of pullouts. I parked at one with a view of the bay, no problem.
Willits, Calif: Stayed at Sleepy Hollow Campground for $14. Could have stayed just 1/4 mile up the road where the first sign appears for the campground there is a U road that would make a nice overnight place off the highway.
Willow Creek , Calif: Come in on 299 turn on 96 about 1 mile where you will see a National Forest sign. Pull in there -- a beautiful site along the Trinity River with portable toilets and picnic tables. Parked there no problem
Hwy 96, Calif : Several National Forest campgrounds , no fee.
Hwy 96 Calif: Klamath River RR Park : Stayed with full hookups ,showers, laundry for $10. Right by the Klamath River, where it looks like great fishing.
Klamath Lake, Ore. Heading for Crater Lake on 140. A huge pullout right beside the lake with portable toilets and viewing benches. Stayed there overnight , no problem
Juntura, Ore; on 20 out of Burns . About 5 miles out of Juntura there is a U road off the highway on the right by river. Beautiful spot. Stayed no problem
Jackpot, Nev. on U.S. 93: Stayed in a casino parking lot. No problem
Yuba Lake State Park Utah :Take Route 15 to 28 $10. No electric but showers, campfires and picnic tables.
Cathedral Gorge, Panaca Nev: Utah 56 to Nev 319. $10. Really nice and clean, beautiful area, special events, good showers water.
Eureka, Nev: On U.S. 50. Passport America park $5. Not much here to recommend but it has full hook ups and was on our way.
Yerington Nev. Rest stop sign says 18 hour parking.
I had no problem finding places to park at night . Would begin to look around dusk and was never disappointed.
