A veteran RVer suggests (Sept., 2000) We have spent many an overnight stay from California to Newfoundland, Key West to Fairbanks, and have never had a bad experience at a Walmart, K-mart, Flying J, TA and several UNMARKED shopping malls. The only two areas in which overnight parking at Walmart was not allowed was in Arizona and Florida. I would also like to state that we also patronize private RV parks about every third day when traveling so we are not anti-RV campgrounds. We would like to make a couple of comments and offer a few rules we think RVers should keep in mind when utilizing non-traditional camping areas. One should always keep in mind that these areas are not "campgrounds." Always be polite and courteous, even if asked to leave. Remember that this is their property, not yours. In the past we have not asked prior permission from the stores where we have stayed overnight. Our reason is that if the store gives you permission to stay it may expose it to the possibility of a lawsuit if something happens to the RVer. We feel it is best to express your gratitude to the store when you are ready to leave. After all, the store would probably have the area posted if it did not allow overnight parking. As obvious as the following suggestions may seem, believe me, some RVers just don't take time to think or else they are just plain dumb.
