Free sites work well when getting a night's sleep is all that's needed

(Nov., 2000)

We spend the winter months traveling the Sun-belt and use Walmarts, Flying-J`s, Kmarts and a number of casinos when all we want is a night`s sleep.

We always check with the security people and limit our activities to sleeping and shopping, and have never had a bad experience. We find that these areas are usually handy to the interstate highways unlike most commercial campgrounds. So they are great time savers.

Without being cheap, it also does not hurt to save from $10 to $30 a night over what we would pay in a commercial campground, when all we want to do is pull in at dusk and leave at dawn, never seeing the grounds nor using the facilities.

We belong to three reciprocal camping clubs so we use regular campgrounds whenever we want to stop for more than an overnight rest. Instead of lamenting these companies that let us stay for free, maybe campground operators should consider having economical boondocking sites for a nominal fee!

As to rest areas, we only used the one for a three hour stop and found it a little unnerving, very dark and isolated. Until prohibited, we will continue to use free facilities for overnighting whenever we can.
